OUR RESULTS

Our holistic approach allows various outcomes for the communities:

  • Gaining 24/7 access to affordable clean water at home allows the sustainable improvement in the quality of life, environment, welfare, and safety of urban poor communities living at the bottom of the pyramid.
  • Having legal access to the services and receiving a formal bill like any other citizen strengthens the communities’ sense of dignity
  • The whole neighbourhood is upgraded through adapted WASH services enhancing the beneficiary’s capacity to practice safe hygiene, sanitation, solid waste management, and fire-fighting.
  • Community members, especially women and children, are empowered. They are the first to suffer from the water chore (collection, transportation, and management) and the lack of access to potable water at home. Water and Life Philippines’ actions enable them to save time for income generating activities, education and be part of community volunteering committees.  This individual access also alleviates women’s multiple burden and eases tension between the dwellers. Peace, harmonious dialogue, and good relationships between all stakeholders are promoted.
  • Moreover, it improves the welfare and health conditions of the communities, especially for children and at-risk people, hence decreasing the families’ health expenses. In fact, children are the first victims of water-borne diseases. Providing the children with reliable and safe access to water along with hygiene awareness sessions leads to a decrease of 34% in the incidence of waterborne diseases,  and boosts the personal hygiene and sanitation of the households which are proven effective in preventing the spread of viruses such as Covid-19.
  • Our project improves the access to livelihood and WASH services, which transforms communities’ overall living conditions. Staff such as plumbers, collectors or community development officers are trained and mainly employed directly from our intervention areas to contribute to poverty reduction and promote community ownership.

TESTIMONIALS

I am the owner of a small carenderia (eatery). The construction of the water network was built end of 2020. Water is essential in maintaining hygiene such as bathing, washing clothes, and cooking. Having direct access to potable water is very important to us because before I had to queue for 30 minutes to fetch water from a hand pump. Most importantly, the easy access to water gives us relief unlike when we used to fetch water from the water pump. I am now more relaxed, I can now, rest when I arrived home, unlike before you cannot rest because you have to fetch water first and continue with your household chores after. Now, you’ll just open your faucet anytime and the water will flow. Fortunately, my family did not experience sickness amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, we used to go out as families and now we can no longer do that. For maintaining our hygiene, we take a bath and hand wash more often it’s good that we have easy access to water. We are also thankful for Water and Life. They helped us especially this time of pandemic where our incomes decrease of more than twice, by continuously providing handwashing soaps, sanitary napkin, toothpaste, and toothbrush as well as awareness to keep us clean. When Water and Life and TPA arrived in our area, we noticed a difference in cleanliness both in households and in the environment. Our neighborhood became more hygienic and we learned proper hygiene from Water and Life. Everything is fine with me with their policies, the water service is of good quality and adapted, we are satisfied. I hope that your service will continue so you can serve more people.

I am now living comfortably with the water access provided by Tubig Pag-asa. I can still remember before Tubig Pag-asa came. Getting water was very hard for me. I’m already old that’s why it’s so hard for me to fetch water. My daughter felt sorry for me because of my age – she didn’t want me to carry buckets of water from the hand pump anymore. So, our family decided to be connected with water from Tubig Pag-asa. Getting water is no longer a daily struggle for me because it’s just inside our house. I have now water access. I am very happy and satisfied now because we are sure that we are consuming cheap and safe water.

I volunteered to join the fire brigade because I realized I had to do something not for me only but for the community. Throughout the different firefighting activities and trainings organized by Eau et Vie, I learnt how to prevent and contain a fire.

I also appreciate the partnership between Water and Life and the local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). “Safety first” – that is what I learnt with the BFP and Water and Life.

Era is quite a charismatic and energetic woman! A reason why the inhabitants asked her to be the community leader. She is also a facilitator for the local organisation in the Philippines (Water and Life). They always consult with her first, before any activities and she participates in all their activities. She is also in charge of many initiatives such as the monthly clean-up day or the building of concrete paths in the areas.

Community is very important to her, she thinks that every member got a responsibility and that community reinforcement will allow a better team work and living conditions.

“Ever since the humble beginning in 1944, Grundfos has been going an extra mile to reach out to the vulnerable groups in society. The Grundfos Foundation builds on this legacy from our founder through financial support to local initiatives, and we are extremely happy and proud to see how the Poul Due Jensen Community Engagement Grant has helped form a thriving partnership between Water and Life and Grundfos in the Philippines.”
