TODAY, BETTER WITH WATER IS DELIVERING RELIABLE AND AFFORDABLE WATER TO 27 URBAN AREAS THROUGHOUT PHILIPPINES AND BANGLADESH.

More than 59,000 beneficiaries in 11 cities and 27 intervention slums benefit from access to quality water at home and additional training, with direct effects on daily life, health and self-esteem.

Having access to safe water directly at home and the adoption of hygienic habits (hand-washing, water use etc.) improves their health and especially of the women and children. The inhabitants can also dedicate a larger part of their time on school or professional activities instead of water fetching.

Overall, better with water’s beneficiaries are progressively becoming actors of their own empowerment, with rights and expertise, taking their full role within the formal economy and participating in local development.

LIVES CHANGED

I am now living comfortably with the water access provided by BWW. I can still remember before BWW came. Getting water was very hard for me. I’m already old that’s why it’s so hard for me to fetch water. My daughter felt sorry for me because of my age – she didn’t want me to carry buckets of water from the hand pump anymore. So, our family decided to be connected with water from BWW. Getting water is no longer a daily struggle for me because it’s just inside our house. I have now water access. I am very happy and satisfied now because we are sure that we are consuming cheap and safe water. Rosalina

Talking with my mom and BWW’s outreach workers reassured me a lot about my body. Esha

Esha and her family had some apprehension about women’s periods. Her mother would not let her out of the house during menstruation, forbidding her to engage in any activity and communicate with others. After participating in an awareness session together, Esha’s mother confessed that she had a better understanding of the phenomenon and no longer wanted to impose these restrictions on her daughter.

I used to have to hurry to line up at the well to collect water, carrying my Kolshi (jars of water). To have enough water for my family, I had to fill two of them, but this could lead to tensions or quarrels with neighbours who were also waiting to collect water.

Now I don’t have to worry about fetching water anymore. There are fewer diseases like diarrhoea in my family. Nurbanu
